Japan's longest run, and room to breathe
Myōkō Suginohara owns a genuine record: the longest single run in Japan, 8.5 km of near-continuous descent from the top of the mountain to its base. On the right morning you can point them and simply ski, and ski, and ski, until your legs give out long before the run does.
It's a big mountain — over 1,100 m of vertical — and, wonderfully, a quiet one. Where the famous names get busy, Suginohara stays uncrowded, its wide upper pistes and superb gladed tree runs often blissfully empty midweek. The snow is pure Myōkō: heavy, frequent, deep, some of the most reliable in Honshū.
The base is low-key and uncommercial, a short hop from the Ikenotaira hot springs for an evening soak. There's no scene to speak of, and that's exactly why the people who know it keep coming back. Bring your endurance and your powder skis — you'll use both.
