Draped across the flank of a great volcanic massif, it is one of the largest single ski areas in the Niigata snow country, yet it wears its size lightly — long, quiet, generous, with a top-to-bottom run of 8.5 km that is Japan's longest, and a vertical of over 1,100 metres that few resorts in the country can match. What you feel here is space: sparse crowds, wide silences, trees heavy with snow, and a lift ride that lifts you from a base at 730 m to a summit at 1,855 m where the world falls away below. It is a place for skiers who like to travel across a mountain rather than lap the same short pitch, and for anyone who wants the snow country as it used to be — unhurried and a little hidden. ### The skiing Sixteen runs, thirty kilometres of piste, and one of them the length of a river valley. That single fact — the 8.5 km descent from top to bottom — tells you what kind of skiing this is: cruising, rolling, endlessly linked runs that let you settle into a rhythm and stay there. The big vertical means genuinely long legs-burning descents, and the gladed tree terrain here is quietly superb, the sort of spaced birch and conifer that catches soft snow and holds it. This is Niigata, so the powder is reliable and plentiful — the region is one of the snowiest inhabited places on earth. Suginohara suits intermediates who want to feel like they're covering ground, confident skiers hunting quiet tree lines, and anyone who values elbow room over lift-line theatre. Beginners will find gentle lower slopes, but the mountain's real gift is length and space, best appreciated by those who can point them downhill for a while. ### Village & charm Suginohara's own base is a working ski area rather than a village in itself — the true storybook life of Myoko sits a short way over the ridge, in the older spa hamlets. But the surrounding Myoko Kogen area carries the dusk-lodge feeling strongly: pension villages tucked into the trees, hand-painted lodge signs, the smell of woodsmoke, and the quiet of a place that empties into evening early. Above the resort looms the great cone of Myoko-san itself (3.4 km), with Akakura-yama and Maeyama close at hand — the kind of mountain-ringed setting where one lit window at the end of a snowy lane is exactly the point. It is high on charm in the honest, weathered way: not curated cuteness, but the real thing, snow settling on real roofs. ### Onsen This is a genuine hot-spring corner, and the bathing is a reason to come. Myoko Onsen, the sulphur spa town, sits just 2.5 km below. Within a short reach you'll also find the milky sulphur waters of **Ike-no-taira Onsen** (2.7 km), the celebrated **Tsubame Onsen "Ōgon-no-yu" / golden waters** (2.9 km), the rustic **Seki Onsen** (3.0 km), and — most romantic of all — the open-air **Akakura Onsen Noten-buro: Taki-no-yu** (3.1 km), a waterfall bath in the snow. These are old-fashioned, mineral-rich waters, the kind you sink into with red cheeks after a long day, watching flakes disappear into the steam. Few ski regions offer this density of authentic onsen; it lifts the whole trip. ### Food & drink The eating clusters in the lodges and the nearby Akakura direction rather than at the lift base. Close in you'll find honest ski-lodge restaurants — **Restaurant Étre** (1.5 km), **Maple** (1.7 km), **Restaurant Alpenblick** (2.0 km) — and a pleasing spread a little further out: **Café & Restaurant Kayaba** and **Nagomi Cafe** for something gentler, the wonderfully named **Shokudō Matagi** (2.3 km) for hearty mountain fare, a **ramen corner** (2.3 km) for the cold-day essential, and Chinese at **Eika** (2.8 km). There's a scattering of European-styled pensions-with-dining (Troika, Sankt Anton, Yodel Lodge) reflecting Myoko's long alpine-resort heritage. For a sweet detour, the drive-through **Oyaki Club** (4.1 km) sells the region's beloved stuffed buns. It's a lodge-food scene more than a fine-dining one — warm, filling, unpretentious. ### Getting there & around The gateway is **Myoko-Kogen station**, reached on the Echigo Tokimeki Railway after the Hokuriku Shinkansen brings you as far as Nagano. From the station it's roughly a 20-minute bus to the slopes. Note the change: the shinkansen speed ends at Nagano, and the last leg is a local line — part of the charm, part of the reason the crowds thin out here. There is parking at the base and in the Akakura area for those driving. On the whole logistics are middling: very doable, but not effortless, which is exactly what keeps Suginohara's secrecy intact. ### Where to stay Accommodation is plentiful and characterful, concentrated in the Akakura and pension villages within a couple of kilometres. The grand old **Akakura Kanko Hotel** (1.9 km) is the landmark — a historic mountain hotel with sweeping views. For the true dusk-lodge feeling, choose among the many pensions and lodges: **Hotel Alpenblick**, **Lodge Myoko**, **Pension Vent Vert**, **Pension Schöne** and **Mori-no-yado Schöne**, **Mountain Hut Myoko**, **Tsubame Highland Lodge**, and the onsen inn **Onsen-yado Susumu** (2.5 km), among dozens more. These are small, family-run, boots-by-the-stove places — the heart of the experience. ### Beyond the slopes The wider Myoko Kogen is rich with quiet finds: the **Myoko Kogen Visitor Center** (2.7 km) for trail and nature information, the shrines **Hachiman-gū** (2.8 km) and **Tenjinja**, the **Yama-no-kami memorial** (1.7 km), and the **Sekigawa Barrier historical museum** (4.9 km), a relic of the old checkpoint roads. Nature dominates — Myoko-san, Akakura-yama, Maeyama, Mitahara-yama ring the valley. And in keeping with Japan's rural quiet, the area even has vacant houses (akiya) for sale, for those who fall hard enough to imagine staying. ### A suggested day Ride the first lifts while the trees still hold the night's snow, then commit to the full 8.5 km descent — a long, unhurried journey down the mountain with the volcano at your back. Break for a bowl of ramen or a plate at Shokudō Matagi, then chase soft snow through the glades until your legs are done. As the light goes amber, drive or walk to Taki-no-yu and lower yourself into the waterfall bath while snow falls. Back at your pension, boots by the stove, a warm meal, an early quiet. ### When to book Plan in the **August–November** window for the deep months of **January to March**, when Niigata's snow is at its most reliable. Suginohara is quieter than the famous names, so accommodation pressure is gentler — but the best pensions and the Akakura Kanko fill early in peak weeks. Book your autumn to secure your winter.
