Wide, sunny slopes made for finding your feet
If Happō is the mountain that tests you, Hakuba Gōryū is the one that welcomes you in. Its lower Toomi field is a broad, sunny apron of wide cruisers fanning out above the big Escal Plaza base — the friendliest beginner and intermediate terrain in the valley, and the reason so many people learn to ski here.
Look higher, though, and it's no pushover. The Alps-daira top section steepens under the rock spires of Mt Gōryū, and the linked Hakuba 47 next door — one ticket, one lift-served ridge away — adds proper north-facing pitch and the valley's best tree runs down its Line C and R. Together, Gōryū & 47 give you a whole day that starts gentle and finishes with your heart going.
It's a resort that does the small things well: fast lifts, tidy grooming, one of Hakuba's best night-skiing sessions, and an easy base with onsen and food a short walk from the snow. Not the most fashionable name in the valley — just quietly one of the most useful. Bring the family, or bring your carving skis.
