### Overview Hakuba Goryu is the quieter, more grounded neighbour in the great Hakuba Valley — a large mountain (16 runs, 24 km, rising from a base at 750 m to 1,676 m) that manages to feel like a real village rather than a resort machine. It links seamlessly by lift with Hakuba 47 on a single ticket (¥6,800 buys you both), so the terrain you actually get is far larger than the numbers here suggest. What sets it apart is the everyday texture around the base: a small botanical garden, a school, a village office, families and farmhouses. This is a mountain you can arrive at by local train, walk to in ten minutes, and settle into like a place people live — because they do. ### The skiing Goryu's skiing runs the full spread. At the bottom, the Toomi base is one of the friendliest beginner areas in the valley — wide, gentle, forgiving, ideal for first turns and for parents easing children in. Up top, Alps-daira turns steep and serious, with pitches that reward strong intermediates and experts, and the payoff of big Northern Alps views on a clear morning. Linked into Hakuba 47, the combined domain gives you far more variety than 24 km implies — tree lines, groomers, and terrain to burn a whole day without repeating yourself. There's night skiing too, which is worth planning around: a lit run after dark, snow drifting through the floodlights, is its own kind of quiet magic. In short — beginners are genuinely well served here, and confident skiers won't run out of mountain. As for powder: Hakuba's reputation is well earned, though Goryu's lower base can mean the bottom slopes soften first, so chase the higher lifts on a good day. ### Village & charm The base cluster around Escal Plaza is compact and unpretentious, and it's the wider Kamishiro–Iimori setting that gives Goryu its soul. Small pensions and lodges, a botanical garden 300 m from the lifts, a village office and library within a few kilometres — this is snow country as lived life, not stage set. It's the dusk-lodge feeling in its truest form: come off the hill as the light goes blue, boots steaming, one warm window glowing, and the mountain quietly turning off for the night. It scores well on charm precisely because it doesn't try — the storybook quality is in the ordinary details. ### Onsen You're spoilt here. Right at the base, within 200 m, the Escal Plaza baths (Jusan-gai no Yu / Ryujin-no-Yu, 竜神の湯) let you soak the moment you unclip. A little over a kilometre away is Hakuba Katakuri Onsen — Juro-no-Yu (十郎の湯), another honest local bath. And three-odd kilometres north, shared with the Happo area, sits Mimizuku-no-Yu (みみずくの湯), a well-loved public bath with valley views, plus the Happo foot-bath and Happo-no-Yu (八方の湯) if you drift that way after dinner. Between the base bath and Mimizuku, Goryu's onsen game is genuinely strong: hot water is never more than a short walk or short hop from your skis. ### Food & drink Eating here is honest and close at hand. Within a kilometre you'll find local staples — Daikoku Shokudo (大黒食堂) for a proper set-menu lunch, Takahashiya (髙橋家), Nijiya's donburi (虹屋 丼丸), and Pizzakaya Izakaya for something more relaxed with a drink. Push a couple of kilometres toward the wider valley and the choice opens up considerably: Tomatito, Penguin Cafe, The Alpine Grill, Sounds Like Cafe, Bear's Café, plus izakaya and international spots like The Samurai and TakoTaco. For self-catering, there are Lawson and Seven-Eleven convenience stores within easy reach, an Aeon and a couple of bakeries (酵母パン koubo-nikki, パンとお菓子の工房 あーる) a little further out, and a butcher (大黒屋精肉店). Enough range that you can eat well every night without repeating yourself, and enough small local rooms to feel you're eating where locals eat. ### Getting there & around This is a genuine strength. Kamishiro Station (JR Ōito Line) sits just a ten-minute walk or short shuttle from the base — Iimori and Kamishiro stations are both within a kilometre. Note this is a *local* line, not the shinkansen, so most travellers will take the bullet train to Nagano and transfer, or come in by bus; the Hakuba Information Center and bus ticket office (with luggage storage) is a few kilometres north at the main Happo terminal. Once here, the Michi-no-Eki Hakuba, petrol stations, and Sanpark parking make car access simple too. Being able to step off a train and walk to the lifts is rare and precious. ### Where to stay Lodging is plentiful and skews to the character end. Close to the lifts, Kitahara-kan (北原館, 0.7 km) and a cluster of pensions and cottages — Assam, Yūyūsha (悠々舎), Hotel Marudai, Sunny Side Hut, Yamaya — sit within about a kilometre. Backpackers and guesthouses like Hakuba Alps Backpackers, K's House Hakuba Alps, and Tabi-Tabi are there for lighter budgets, and Hotel Mont Blanc Hakuba for something more hotel-like. With over ninety options within 5 km, from B&Bs to self-catering cottages, you can pick your exact temperature — right at the snow, or a quiet walk away. ### Beyond the slopes The valley carries real history. Within a few kilometres you'll find old shrines and temples — Jōrin-ji (貞麟寺), Shinmei-sha, Kosen-jinja — the salt-road (千國街道) markers, and small halls like the Iida Thirteen-Buddha hall. Further north stand the 1998 Olympic legacy sites: the ski-jump arena (白馬ジャンプ競技場), the cauldron, and the "100 Gold Medals" markers. There's a botanical garden by the base and quiet peaks — Yazaki-yama, Jizō-no-atama — for spring wandering. The area even has vacant houses (akiya) for sale, for those who fall hard enough to stay. ### A suggested day First lifts up to Alps-daira for the views and the best snow before the base softens. Lunch low down at Daikoku Shokudo. An easy afternoon on the linked 47 terrain, then back for the base bath at Escal Plaza as the light turns blue. Warm up, walk out to Pizzakaya or into the valley for dinner — and if there's night skiing, one last lit run under the snow. ### When to book For January–March snow, plan in the August–November window.
