Shiga Kogen志賀高原スキー場

Shiga Kōgen is not a resort so much as a snowbound country. Eighteen interconnected ski areas sprawl across a high plateau below Mt Yokote, stitched together by a web of gondolas and lifts and covered by a single ticket — the largest linked ski area in Japan, big enough to ski for a week and still find a run you haven't touched.

Height is its secret weapon. At well over 1,500 m the plateau holds cold, dry, reliable snow long after lower resorts have gone slushy, and the season stretches from November into May. The terrain has a corner for everyone: the burly pitches of Yakebitaiyama, the quiet powder bowls of Okushiga, the beloved tree runs at Terakoya. An Olympic venue in 1998, it still skis like a serious mountain.

There's no single onsen village here — accommodation is scattered across the plateau in ski-in hotels — but you're a short drive from Jigokudani, where the wild snow monkeys bathe in their own hot spring. Come for the scale, and give yourself the days to actually use it.
