The powder capital, and it earns the title
Niseko United — four linked resorts (Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri) wrapped around Mt Annupuri — is the most famous powder destination on earth, and unlike most legends, it delivers. Storm after storm rolls in off the Sea of Japan and unloads 13–15 m of feather-light snow a season, so relentlessly that a fresh half-metre before breakfast barely raises eyebrows.
What sets it apart is access: floodlit night skiing you can actually find powder in, and a proper, gated backcountry system that lets you tour into the sidecountry legally and safely when the gates open. Across the valley, the perfect white cone of Mt Yōtei watches over all of it — the postcard that launched a thousand ski trips.
Hirafu, the main village, is unlike anywhere else in Japan: international, lively, packed with onsen, izakaya and world-class dining, for better and for worse. It isn't cheap and it isn't quiet — but the snow is real, and once you've skied it you understand the hype. Book early, ski dawn patrol, soak with a Yōtei view.
