Tucked in the hills behind Otaru, Kiroro quietly records some of the deepest, most reliable snowfall on all of Hokkaido — and does it with a fraction of the fuss of the big names an hour away. Two peaks, Nagamine and Asari, catch storm after storm and turn them into consistently bottomless powder.

It's a mountain built for cruising and tree-hunting rather than heroics: long, well-groomed pistes for the family, and pockets of gladed forest that stay soft and untracked because so few people are here to track them. If your idea of a good day is lap after lap of cold, dry snow with no queue, Kiroro is quietly one of the best in Japan.

Like Rusutsu, it's an integrated resort rather than a town — a couple of big hotels with their own onsen at the base, self-contained and easy with kids. There's no nightlife to speak of, which is precisely the point. Come for the snow and the calm; leave rested and over-skied.
