Appi Kōgen is Iwate's polished giant, and its calling card is length: it claims the longest average run in Japan — 2.1 km — which in practice means run after run of long, silky, immaculately groomed corduroy sweeping down a broad mountain, the kind of cruising that turns intermediates into addicts.
The snow is a quiet secret. This is deep Tōhoku, far from the international crowds, and Appi's dry, light, so-called 'aspen' powder falls thick and often on a hill that's mostly empty midweek. Beyond the pistes, quiet secondary-forest tree runs give the powder hunters their fix without the lift queues of the famous names further south and north.
Two big resort hotels sit at the base rather than a town, which makes Appi effortlessly easy — ski out of the door, soak in the on-site onsen, repeat. It's not fashionable and it's not trying to be. What it is, is long groomers, good snow and space to breathe. For a certain kind of skier, that's the whole dream.
