Tsugaike Kogen

Tsugaike Kogen sits at the northern end of the Hakuba valley, and it wears its reputation gently: this is the mountain where beginners fall in love with snow, and where the backcountry crowd quietly slips away toward Norikura-dake and the wild high country above. That double life — a vast, forgiving front and a serious, snowbound back — is what makes it worth the trip. It's a large resort by Japanese standards (16 runs, 26 km, base at 800 m rising to 1,704 m), but the abiding memory most people carry home is of space: a beginner slope 1,200 metres wide, the width of a small valley, where you can make your first turns without fear of anyone. Then, at the top, the mountains open into something far older and stranger. ## The skiing The signature here is that enormous, gentle apron of a beginner slope — genuinely one of the widest in the country, and the reason Tsugaike is beloved by families and first-timers. If you've never skied, or you're bringing children or nervous friends, this is the place to do it: there is simply room to breathe. Above and around it, the terrain builds through the tree lines and the Hannoki high-speed pair (ハンの木高速ペア) toward the upper mountain, where things steepen and the snow deepens. But Tsugaike's second identity is what earns it real respect: it is the gateway to the Tsugaike backcountry and the slopes of Norikura-dake (乗鞍岳, 3.9 km out). The high peaks ring the resort — 鵯峰 (Hiyodori-mine) at 1.6 km, 赤倉山, 船越ノ頭, 小日向山 — and beyond the ropes lies serious alpine terrain reached by the Snowpark and the routes up toward 天狗原 (Tenguppara). This is real mountaineering country, not sidecountry; the huts scattered around (白馬大池山荘, 猿倉荘, 白馬尻小屋) are summer-alpine shelters, a reminder that these ridges lead to the Hakuba high route. Hakuba-valley powder reliability is dependable and abundant. In short: mellow enough for a five-year-old's first day, ferocious enough for a ski-tourer's whole season. ## Village & charm The base village strings along below the lifts, with the day-use bath and the older lodges gathered close. It's a working ski village rather than a manicured resort town, and that's its quiet charm — the栂池ヒュッテ (Tsugaike Hütte) and its記念館 (memorial hall) up near the visitor centre speak to a long mountaineering heritage, the kind of place where the walls remember older expeditions. Come dusk, when the wide slope goes blue and the lodge windows light one by one, Tsugaike has that particular high-plateau stillness: snow settling, boots steaming by a stove, the mountains gone dark and enormous behind you. ## Onsen The heart of the bathing here is **Tsugaike Onsen Motoyu (栂の湯)**, just 0.4 km from the base — a public day-use bath right in the village, the natural place to soak away a day on the wide slope. Further afield, at 4.3 km, sits **おびなたの湯**, a more remote bath toward the mountain trailheads for those who want to wander. Two honest choices: one warm and close, one wild and a little further. ## Food & drink Eating at Tsugaike is intimate rather than sprawling. Closest to the snow is **キッチン栂の森** (0.7 km), the on-mountain kitchen for a mid-day plate. Down in and around the wider village you'll find **みずばしょう** (2.2 km), **栂池パーク** and **ツガベース** (around 3.5 km), the cosy **あみん** and **レストランSNOW DROP** (3.9 km), and the café **CHAVATY** (4.1 km). Toward the neighbouring Iwatake area there's a **city bakery** (3.2 km), a **Burger King** (2.5 km) for the undemanding, and **Endless Bar & Restaurant** (4.6 km) for a later drink. A single convenience store, **ヤマザキショップ** (3.6 km), covers the basics. It's not a gourmet destination — but there's enough warmth and variety to eat well across a few days. ## Getting there & around Tsugaike is reached via the JR Oito Line — a local line, not the shinkansen — with **Hakuba** and Hakuba-Ōmachi the nearest stations, then roughly a 25-minute bus up to the resort. Most travellers come via the wider Hakuba-valley transfer network. On the mountain, the base is well served by lifts and gondola stations (栂の森 at 0.8 km, 栂大門, 自然園, 白樺, and the栂池高原 base itself). Parking is centred on栂池中央駐車場 (3.6 km) and鐘の丘第一駐車場 (3.8 km). Logistics are straightforward once you're in the valley, if a step removed from the bullet-train grid. ## Where to stay Lodging clusters around the village and the base area, from the classic **栂池山荘** (2.2 km) up near the visitor centre to a broad spread near the栂池高原 base: **Tsugaike Kogen Hotel Hakuba Berghaus**, **栂池観光ホテル**, **栂池グランドロッジ**, **ホテルベルハート**, and characterful smaller places like **Auberuge La Chaumiere / ラ・シュミエール**, **ロッジ高原荘**, **みやま荘**, and **ひよどり山荘**. Toward Iwatake sit **Highland Lodge**, **Conntry Joe**, **Sierra Resort Hakuba** and **Front Stage**. There's real range here — old-guard mountain lodges and newer resort stays both — so choose by mood. ## Beyond the slopes The great draw beyond the lifts is the mountain wilderness itself: the **栂池ビジターセンター** and **栂池ヒュッテ記念館** (both 2.2 km) tell the story of this high plateau, and in green season the栂池自然園 wetlands above are famous. The peaks — 乗鞍岳, 天狗原, ねずこの森 (a forest trail at 3.3 km) — are the front door to the Hakuba high route. Neighbouring **白馬岩岳スノーフィールド** (3.4 km) offers a change of scene. And, as much as we know, the wider area even has vacant houses (akiya) for sale — the sort of quiet fantasy that a good dusk here plants in you. ## A suggested day Start slow on the wide morning slope while the light is flat and the crowds thin, then ride toward the Hannoki lift as the mountain wakes. Lunch at キッチン栂の森 near the top. In the afternoon, if you're built for it, push toward the upper terrain and the backcountry gates; if not, keep carving the endless beginner apron until your legs give out. As the slope turns blue, walk down to 栂の湯 and soak. Dinner at あみん or 栂池パーク, then a nightcap somewhere warm while the snow keeps falling. ## When to book For the deep January–March snow that makes Tsugaike sing, plan in the **August–November** window. Book lodging and valley transfers early — the good village lodges are limited, and Hakuba fills.
