Madarao. It is unmistakably a family mountain — a base hotel with its own onsen, gentle sightlines, a lake glinting far below from the top station — but it carries a quiet trump card: it's lift-linked to Madarao next door, which turns a modest resort into a genuinely full day of skiing. Come here for the calm, the views, and the feeling of a place that isn't trying too hard to impress you. ### The skiing Let's be honest about the scale first: ten runs, ten kilometres, base at 1,000 m rising to 1,350 m. On its own, Tangram is a medium resort that leans firmly toward beginners, families and cruisy intermediates — wide, forgiving pistes and a base-hotel setup that means the whole day orbits the same warm building. But the lift link to Madarao is the point. Together the two mountains open up considerably more terrain, and Madarao is well known among those who know for tree runs and reliable Nagano powder. So the real recommendation is this: if you're travelling with children, mixed abilities, or you simply want a base that's low-stress and view-blessed, Tangram is a lovely home mountain — and the moment you want more bite, it's one lift ride away. The top-station view over Lake Nojiri is the sort of thing you stop and look at even mid-run. The broader life of the area, though, spreads across the Madarao Kōgen plateau just up the road, where a scatter of pensions, small bars and cafés forms the kind of loose, lamp-lit community that comes alive after the lifts close. It isn't a bustling townscape; it's the dusk-lodge feeling of lit windows across snow, boots drying, someone's kitchen going. If storybook stillness is what you're after, this is the register Tangram plays in. ### Onsen Right at the base — 0.1 km, effectively your own front door — is the Hotel Tangram onsen, a ryokan-style bath open for day use. That's the easy, obvious soak: ski in, bathe, done. A little further out, at 1.7 km on the Madarao side, is **まだらおの湯** (Madarao-no-yu), the plateau's community bathing-and-exchange facility, worth the short trip if you want a hot spring with a bit more local texture. Between the two you're well covered: convenience at the base, character up the hill. ### Food & drink For a resort this size, the eating around here is a genuine surprise — the Madarao plateau within a couple of kilometres is thick with small, characterful places. There's a burger joint (**Aki's Burger in Tirol**, 1.2 km) and its sibling **Aki's Pub & Café**; alpine-named spots like **Heidi**, **Restaurant Banff** and **Trois Cinq**; a mountain lodge café (**斑尾マウンテンロッジカフェ**); and a proper cluster of après options — **Hakken Whisky Bar**, **Chill Bar**, **Drop Off Bar**, **Tap That! & Slurp It!**, and the wonderfully named **レストラン・バー Jazzy**. For something warming and Japanese, **Japanese Hot Pot Dining 円 Malu** does hot pot, and **大衆食堂 レスト ウェストバレー** reads as an honest, everyday shokudō. There's even a **野尻湖ラウンジ** (Nojiriko Lounge) nodding to the lake. It's an unexpectedly deep bench for a plateau — enough that you could eat somewhere different each night of a week's stay. ### Getting there & around The gateway is **Iiyama** on the Hokuriku Shinkansen — a proper bullet-train station, which makes this an easy run from Tokyo — followed by a shuttle of around 30 minutes up to the resort. That combination is a real strength: fast rail to the region, then a short transfer. Once you're here, the base hotel and the plateau's clusters are close enough that a day works comfortably on shuttles and short hops; there's abundant numbered parking (No. 1 through No. 7) if you drive. ### Where to stay The simplest choice is **Hotel Tangram** at the base — ski-in, ski-out, its own onsen, built for families. Beyond that, the Madarao plateau (roughly 1.7–2.3 km away) offers a rich spread of smaller, more personal lodging: **斑尾高原ホテル**, the larger **斑尾レインストンホテル**, and a lovely run of pensions and lodges — **Chalete Madarao**, **Shinano Pension**, **Alpha Lodge Madarao**, **Woody Hill**, **First Tracks Madarao**, and characterful little houses like **ペンション絵日記** and **ペンション りんごじゃむ**. If you want the base-hotel ease, stay at Tangram; if you want the lamp-lit-pension feeling, look up the hill. ### Beyond the slopes The nature here is quietly generous: **斑尾山** (Mt. Madarao) rises right beside the resort at 0.5 km, with **袴岳** and other peaks further out. Down below is Lake Nojiri, with the **野尻湖テラス** (a lake-view terrace, 1.4 km) and a **visitor centre / 山の家** (2.4 km) as gentle non-ski outings. In summer this becomes camping country — several campsites ring the lake and plateau. And for the daydreamers: the area even has vacant houses for sale — one **akiya** listed at Iizuna-machi, about 3.9 km out, at ¥1,500,000. Proof that some people fall hard enough to stay. ### A suggested day Wake at the base, coffee, first lifts while the pistes are still corduroy. Cross over to Madarao when you want more, chase a few tree lines, then drift back to Tangram for the top-station view over the lake in the flat afternoon light. Down for a soak at the Tangram onsen as your legs go heavy. Change, wander the plateau at dusk for a whisky at Hakken or a burger at Aki's, and end somewhere with hot pot as the snow starts up again outside the window. ### When to book For January–March snow, do your planning in the **August–November** window — that's when to lock lodging (especially the smaller pensions, which fill fast) and settle your Iiyama shinkansen legs. Book early, then let the winter come to you.
