### Overview Ryuoo is the kind of mountain that rewards you for looking up. From a modest base at 850 metres, a 166-person ropeway hauls you a thousand vertical metres skyward to the SORA terrace, where — on the right afternoon — you stand above a sea of cloud with tea in hand and the whole Shiga Kogen plateau spread out below. It's a medium-sized resort by the numbers (18 runs, roughly 20 km of piste), but the 1,080-metre vertical drop and that steep upper powder bowl give it a stature well beyond its footprint. Sitting on the northern doorstep of the Kita-Shiga highlands, close to famous onsen towns and the snow monkeys, Ryuoo is a resort that punches above its size and still keeps a foot in quiet, storybook territory. ### The skiing The signature here is honesty of scale. That 1,080-metre vertical is the real prize — few resorts of this size give you so much fall-line to work with, top to bottom. The upper mountain around **Osankogen** is the heart of the matter: a steep powder bowl that, on a good north-Nagano day, delivers the cold, dry snow this region is quietly known for. Powder reliability sits at the higher end of dependable — the elevation and aspect help — while the terrain earns respect more for that vertical and the upper bowl than for sheer breadth of runs. Who does it suit? Confident intermediates and up will get the most out of Ryuoo — the top section is where the character lives, and it can bite when the weather turns. Beginners and families have gentler ground lower down, but this is a mountain that shines brightest for skiers who came to earn some turns and stand somewhere high and wild. The ropeway means even non-skiers can ride up to the terrace, which makes it kinder for mixed groups than its steep reputation suggests. ### Village & charm Let's be honest about the base: Ryuoo is a lift-and-ropeway resort more than a lived-in village, and its soul comes from the mountain and the terrace rather than a cluster of old timber inns at the foot of the runs. But the surrounding valley more than makes up for it. Drop down the road toward Yudanaka and you enter genuine onsen-town country — narrow lanes, steam curling from bathhouse doors, the older architecture of Shibu just beyond. That's where the dusk-lodge feeling lives here: not at the lift base, but two or three kilometres down the hill, where a warm lit window and boots by a stove are still very much part of the evening. Come for the mountain by day, and let the valley hold you at night. ### Onsen This is where Ryuoo's neighbourhood turns quietly extraordinary. Just 2.7 km away is **Yudanaka Onsen**, a proper public hot-spring town at the base of the ropeway road. A little further out (around 4 km) lies the Shibu run of numbered public baths — **初湯 (Hatsuyu, No.1)**, **笹の湯 (No.2)**, **綿の湯 (No.3)**, on through the **大湯 (No.9, Ōyu)** — the classic nine-bath pilgrimage of a traditional onsen town, with foot baths (**足湯 のふとまる**) and curiosities like the **銭洗い温泉** (coin-washing spring) scattered between. There's real depth here for bathers: this is one of the more storied hot-spring corners of Nagano, and the onsen experience is easily among the strongest reasons to base yourself in the valley rather than up at the lifts. ### Food & drink Eating clusters mostly in the mid-valley, a short hop from the base. Up high, the **SORA terrace cafe** (3.9 km) is the destination in its own right — coffee above the clouds. Down the mountain you'll find a spread of honest resort restaurants: **レストランわらび**, **カフェ＆レストランロッキー**, **The Farmhouse** (3.5 km), and soba at **そば禄** (3.6 km). For an evening with more life, **居酒屋たいむ** and **猿座** (both ~3.2 km) lean izakaya. It's a practical, warm-kitchen sort of food scene rather than a fine-dining trail — exactly right after a day of vertical. Sweet-tooths should note the old confectioners down in the onsen town: **小古井菓子店**, **西山製菓本舗**, **松本製菓** — the kind of shops that have been wrapping steamed buns and sweets for generations. ### Getting there & around The nearest station is **Yudanaka** on the Nagano Dentetsu Line, about a 15-minute bus from the base. Note this is a local line, not the shinkansen — you'll typically ride the bullet train to Nagano, then transfer to the Dentetsu line down the valley. It's a straightforward, well-trodden route (the snow monkeys pull steady traffic this way), and the short bus hop means logistics are manageable rather than effortless. A car gives you freedom to roam between the onsen towns, but isn't essential. ### Where to stay The choice splits neatly. Up near the plateau and the neighbouring Shiga Kogen lifts sit the bigger hotels — **志賀グランドホテル**, **志賀高原オリンピックホテル**, the **志賀高原プリンスホテル** cluster, **ビワ池ホテル** and **アスペン志賀** (all 2.7–3.4 km). Down in the onsen towns you'll find the character: **歴史の宿 金具屋** (4.1 km), a famously atmospheric wooden ryokan, plus **小石屋旅館**, **旅館 玉久**, **Daimaruya Ryokan** and **和風の宿 ますや**. For something singular, **地獄谷温泉後楽館** (1.8 km) sits right by the monkey valley. Our steer: sleep in a valley ryokan for the full boots-by-the-stove evening. ### Beyond the slopes The headline neighbour is the **地獄谷野猿公苑** — the snow monkey park (1.7 km) — where wild macaques bathe in a steaming pool through winter, one of the region's genuine wonders. The valley is thick with nature: the **澗満瀧展望台** waterfall lookout, ponds like **一沼** and **Mizunasi Pond**, and the surrounding peaks (**五輪山**, **旭山**, **竜王山**) all within the Jōshin'etsu-kōgen national park. Shibu's old streets even hold a small retro fairground (**渋温泉遊園地**). And for the dreamers: the area even has a vacant house for sale — an *akiya* about 3.8 km out, listed at ¥1,000,000. Proof that this valley still leaves a door ajar. ### A suggested day Ride up early while the upper bowl is quiet; take a few honest runs off Osankogen before the light flattens. Mid-morning, break at the SORA terrace for coffee above the clouds. Ski down through lunch — soba at **そば禄** or a warm plate at The Farmhouse. Early afternoon, trade skis for the monkey park, watching macaques steam in their pool. As dusk falls, roll down to the onsen town, work through a bath or two of the numbered Shibu circuit, then find your ryokan, a small izakaya (**居酒屋たいむ**), and let the snow do the rest. ### When to book For the January–March powder window — when the upper bowl is at its best — plan and reserve in the **August–November** stretch. The valley's ryokan, especially the atmospheric wooden ones, are few and beloved, and the snow-monkey traffic keeps demand steady all winter; the sooner you lock lodging in that autumn window, the better your pick of the warm lit windows down the hill.
