Nozawa Onsen

Some ski towns are built for skiing and happen to have a village attached. Nozawa Onsen is the other way around: a working hot-spring settlement, centuries old, that happens to have a very good mountain rising straight out of its steaming rooftops. That is its magic and its difference. You ski all day across 50 kilometres of runs, then walk home through narrow lanes where the drainage channels breathe visible steam into the cold, past thirteen free wooden bathhouses your neighbours have used for generations. There is no purpose-built resort strip here, no manufactured cheer — just a real place, high in Nagano, that has been warming visitors long before the first skis arrived. It is one of Japan's great, whole experiences. ## The skiing Nozawa is a Large mountain and skis like one: 44 runs, 50 km of piste, a base at 565 m rising to 1,650 m at the top. That 1,085 metres of vertical is serious for Japan, and it buys you variety — long cruising boulevards, genuine steeps, and the legendary tree runs at **Uenotaira and Yamabiko** that the mountain is quietly famous for. The upper reaches hold the good snow (powder reliability is the honest question at any resort with a low base, and here you want to ride high on a warm day). Access is efficient once you're up: the Nagasaka Gondola base sits at the village edge, with the 長坂 and 日陰 triples and a dense web of lifts feeding the terrain above. Who it suits: nearly everyone. Beginners have gentle top-of-mountain slopes and the 遊ロード learners' area; intermediates get endless width; and strong skiers have the tree runs and pitch to chase for a week without repeating themselves. The layout — top-heavy, with the best terrain up high — rewards those willing to lap the upper mountain rather than drift down early. ## Village & charm This is where Nozawa earns its keep. The base village is the whole point — tight lanes, wooden facades, steam curling from public bathhouses, the smell of woodsmoke and cooking. At dusk, when the light goes blue and the snow keeps falling, the lit windows and the older hosts standing in doorways of family ryokan give exactly the feeling we chase: warmth held against the cold. The charm factor here is as high as it gets in Japan — not staged, but lived-in. Woven through the village are small human touches: the 乙女 (maiden) statue, roadside 道祖神 guardian shrines, the 健命寺 temple up the hill (birthplace, as it happens, of the local nozawana greens). And once a year in mid-January the village erupts for the **Dosōjin Fire Festival** — one of Japan's great fire rituals, primal and unforgettable. If your dates allow it, plan around it. ## Onsen Onsen is not a side attraction at Nozawa; it's the reason the village exists. There are **thirteen free public soto-yu bathhouses** scattered through the lanes, maintained by the community and open to visitors with a donation box by the door. The iconic one is **Ōyu (大湯)**, a beautiful wooden bathhouse that is the very symbol of the village, a short stroll from the slopes. **Kawahara-yu**, **Shinden-no-yu**, and the many others — 熊の手洗湯, 上寺湯, 麻釜の湯, 十王堂の湯, 松葉の湯 among them — are all within a few hundred metres of each other. A word of etiquette: these baths are genuinely hot and genuinely local. Rinse thoroughly, be quiet, take it slowly. For a more relaxed, day-use soak with an outdoor bath, **Furusato-no-yu (ふるさとの湯)** near the 麻釜 hot-spring park is the gentle option. There is even a small foot onsen for tired legs. On the onsen scorecard, Nozawa is about as good as Japan offers. ## Food & drink The eating is dense and varied for a village this size — over sixty places within walking distance. For local flavour, look to the 郷土料理 治作 (regional home cooking) and soba spots like **Yoshimi Soba**; for comfort after a cold day there's yakiniku at 焼肉 萬里, okonomiyaki at 通草亭, and steady old shokudō like 池光食堂 and 食事処 新屋. The international crowd has left its mark too — **Happy Mountain Curry**, **Juntos** Mexican, **The Corner Steakhouse**, **Dining Bar Hakuna Matata** — so you're never short of options. Morning coffee at 七良兵衛珈琲, a Swiss bakery (灯 Akari House) for bread, Aunt Mary's crepes for a sweet on the walk home. Provisions come from Nozawa Supermarket, みゆき商店, and the Yamazaki convenience shops. ## Getting there & around Logistics are a real strength. The nearest station is **Iiyama**, on the **Hokuriku Shinkansen** — meaning you can reach it directly by fast train from Tokyo — with the **Nozawa Onsen Liner** bus completing the journey in about 25 minutes. That shinkansen link is the difference between a half-day slog and an easy morning's travel. Once in the village, everything is walkable, and the 中央バスターミナル (central bus terminal) handles connections. The nearer JR Iiyama Line halts — 長坂駅, 日陰駅 — are local stops; for speed, aim for Iiyama. ## Where to stay Stay in the village, and stay in something with soul. The lodging here is overwhelmingly family-run ryokan and pensions, most within a few hundred metres of the lifts and baths: **奈良屋旅館**, **かめや旅館**, **梅之屋**, 富一屋, and the pension-style 静泉荘 and 白樺. Larger options include 野沢グランドホテル and 野沢ビューホテル嶋田屋. Self-catering apartments (Hello Apartments, Montefino, the Villa Nozawa houses) suit groups. Wherever you land, you're minutes from a soto-yu. ## Beyond the slopes The **Japan Ski Museum** (日本スキー博物館), about a kilometre out, tells the story of how the sport took root here. There's the おぼろ月夜の館 cultural hall, the 健命寺 temple, and — a legacy of the village's sporting past — a biathlon range and cross-country trails at Sparena. In summer 毛無山 and 水尾山 rise green above. And for the dreamers: the surrounding Iiyama area even has vacant houses (akiya) quietly for sale — a handful from around ¥1,000,000 to ¥9,800,000 within a few kilometres — the seed of a certain kind of fantasy. ## A suggested day Coffee at 七良兵衛珈琲, then the gondola up while the snow's still cold. Lap Yamabiko's trees through the morning, break for soba, chase the upper mountain until your legs go. Ski home into the village at dusk, boots steaming. A slow, scalding soak at Ōyu. Yakiniku or regional cooking, a quiet beer, and the walk back through the steam. ## When to book For January–March snow — and especially if you want to be here for the mid-January fire festival — plan in the **August–November window**. The best village ryahan fill early, and festival week fills earliest of all. Book the room first; the mountain will keep.
