## The skiing Madarao's identity is its trees. As Japan's original managed tree-run resort, it built its reputation on those glades, and they remain the reason to make the trip. When the snow is falling — and here it falls often, cold and light — the pillowed gaps between birch trunks are the whole point, forgiving enough for a confident intermediate to learn the art of tree skiing and interesting enough to keep a strong skier grinning all day. The lift-linked connection to neighbouring Tangram, on a single ticket, effectively doubles the canvas without doubling the fuss, and it gives the day a natural rhythm: lap the trees on one side, drift over to the other for a change of aspect and light. The vertical is gentle and the resort is honestly medium-sized, so this isn't a mountain for those chasing big-vertical steeps or a week of never repeating a run. It's a powder-and-glades resort — its powder reliability and its terrain both earn their keep — that rewards the skier who values snow quality and the pleasure of a good tree line over sheer scale. ## Village & charm The base at Madarao is a scatter of pensions and small hotels across the plateau rather than a single tight village, and that gives it a particular, low-key warmth. This is chalet country — you'll find names like Chalete Madarao, Shinano Pension, Woody Hill and a cluster of family-run lodges within a few hundred metres of the lifts. The effect at dusk is exactly the one you hope for: lit windows across the snowfield, boots steaming by the door, the smell of something cooking. It is understated rather than storybook-postcard, but it carries genuine soul precisely because it isn't a manufactured resort strip — these are places people run themselves, on a plateau that empties out and goes quiet after the lifts stop. ## Onsen Bathing here is simpler than in the grand onsen towns, and it's fair to be honest about that. Closest to the slopes is the day-use bath at the Madarao Kogen Hotel, right on the plateau at half a kilometre — the easy after-ski soak, a warm room to thaw in before dinner. A little further out, about 2.3 km, is Madarao no Yu (まだらおの湯), the local experience-and-exchange facility, which is the more characterful public option if you want to make a small outing of it. This isn't a destination for onsen connoisseurs the way Nozawa or Shibu are, but there's enough hot water within easy reach to end a cold day well. ## Food & drink For a plateau resort, Madarao eats surprisingly well — and, notably, with an international, apres-forward streak. Within a short walk you'll find a proper hot-pot dining room (Japanese Hot Pot Dining 円 Malu), a whisky bar (Hakken), a crepe house, and a lively lineup of bars and cafés: Chill Bar, Drop Off Bar, Aki's Pub & Café, the cheerfully named Tap That! & Slurp It!, and Restaurant Banff and Jazzy for something more sit-down. Aki's Burger in Tirol and Fat Chef speak to the crowd this place draws. For something more homely and Japanese, 大衆食堂 レスト ウェストバレー (a plain-good local canteen) and あんじゃね round out the picture. It's a genuinely varied little scene for a mountain this size — you could eat somewhere different each night for a week. ## Getting there & around The gateway is Iiyama, a stop on the Hokuriku Shinkansen — which is the good news: it means a fast, clean bullet-train run rather than a long slog on local lines. From Iiyama it's a shuttle of about 25 minutes up onto the plateau. Once you're there, everything worth reaching sits within a few hundred metres, and the resort maintains numbered parking lots (No. 1 through 7) if you arrive by car. Logistics are refreshingly simple: shinkansen, short transfer, and you're among the lodges. ## Where to stay Stay in a pension. That's the honest answer here — the plateau is dense with them, and they're the heart of the place. Within 0.2–0.7 km of the lifts you have Chalete Madarao, Shinano Pension, Madam Millet, Madarao Lumbers Inn, Oono Pension, the Rainstone Hotel, Alpha Lodge Madarao, Woody Hill, and characterful smaller houses like ペンション りんごじゃむ (apple-jam pension), むね樹ペンション and ペンション絵日記. The Madarao Kogen Hotel is the larger option with its own onsen. For the dusk-lodge feeling this report keeps returning to, choose a small family-run pension — that's where you'll get the older host at the door and the boots drying by the stove. ## Beyond the slopes The plateau sits beneath its namesake peak, Madarao-yama (2.1 km), with Hakama-dake and Kenashi-yama rising nearby — proper backcountry-adjacent country for those who look. Below lies Lake Nojiri, and the Nojiriko Terrace viewpoint (2.2 km) is worth the short trip for the outlook. There's a visitor centre, the "mountain house" (山の家), at under a kilometre, and Aka Ike pond campsite for warmer-season wandering. Two outdoor-sports outfitters (North Nagano Outdoor Sports, Action Snow Sports) can sort gear and guiding. And in the surrounding hills, as in much of Japan's snow country, the area even has vacant houses — akiya — for sale, for anyone whose weekend daydream turns serious. ## A suggested day Coffee and a slow start; first lifts for the trees while the snow is untracked, working the glades between the marked runs. Drift over to the Tangram side mid-morning for a change of light. A canteen lunch — hot pot if the cold's got into you. Afternoon laps until the legs go, then the day-use bath at the hotel to thaw. Crepes or a burger to tide you over, then dinner in your pension. A nightcap at the whisky bar, and out into the quiet — lit windows across the snow, the mountain gone dark above. ## When to book Madarao's dry snow lands squarely in the January–March window, with midwinter the surest bet for those glades. Because the lodging here is small and family-run rather than a wall of hotel rooms, the good pensions go early — do your planning in the August–November window, settle on your pension first, and let the shinkansen-and-shuttle logistics fall into place around it. Book the bed before the lift ticket; the beds are the scarce thing.
