## Kandatsu Snow Resort — 神立スノーリゾート
### Overview
Kandatsu is the mountain you reach almost before you've finished your coffee. Seven minutes on a free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa — one of the most reliable snow doors on the entire Joetsu Shinkansen line — and you're standing at the base of a compact, characterful hill that punches above its size. It is not a sprawling giant; twelve runs across twelve kilometres, base at 350 metres, top at 900. But it has a reputation locals guard quietly: the steepest black runs anywhere near Yuzawa, a base lodge that never sleeps (open 24 hours, with an onsen inside it), and night skiing that draws a devoted crowd. For a skier who wants Niigata powder without the logistical fuss, and a place to soak and sleep at the foot of the lift, Kandatsu is a small, sharp pleasure.
### The skiing
Twelve runs and twelve kilometres tell you this is a resort you can learn by heart in a day — and that's part of its charm. The vertical drop, though, is honest: 550 metres from top to base, enough to matter. What sets Kandatsu apart is steepness. Its black runs are the sharpest in the Yuzawa neighbourhood, so if you're a confident skier tired of gentle cruisers, this is where you come to feel your edges bite. Niigata's snow does the rest — this is deep-country powder terrain, reliably cold and frequent through midwinter. The flip side of a medium hill with steep pitches is that intermediate variety is limited; strong beginners and cruisers will find it small. But the night skiing is a genuine draw, and there's a particular magic to lapping a floodlit slope while snow falls through the cones of light. For a resort of this scale, the terrain works hardest for the fast and the curious.
### Village & charm
Here's the honest truth: Kandatsu doesn't have a village in the storybook sense. The heart of the place is the base lodge itself — a building that stays lit and open around the clock, with an onsen tucked inside. That gives it a different kind of soul: not a street of little inns but a single warm, glowing hub where skiers drift in and out at all hours, boots steaming by the entrance, the windows bright against the dark. It's the dusk-lodge feeling distilled into one building. For company and old-fashioned inn atmosphere you look a little further out, toward the cluster of family ryokan and lodges around Ishiuchi, a few kilometres down the valley. But if the appeal of a mountain is arriving cold and leaving warm without ever going far, Kandatsu delivers exactly that.
### Onsen
The signature here is convenience raised to a virtue: **Kandatsu Kogen Onsen** sits inside the base building, a hundred metres from the lifts. You ski, you soak, and you never touch a car. For a longer, more considered bath, **Ishiuchi Yungparunas** (石打ユングパルナス) lies about four kilometres away — a proper hot-spring complex worth an evening. Closer still, tucked among the Ishiuchi lodges, **Maruyama Onsen Kojōkan** (丸山温泉 古城館) offers the quieter, older-inn variety of bathing. Between the in-lodge onsen and these two neighbours, the soaking side of a Kandatsu trip is better served than the resort's size suggests.
### Food & drink
Eating at Kandatsu itself centres on the 24-hour lodge, but the wider valley within five kilometres rewards a little wandering. Toward the Kiyotsu Gorge you'll find **雪ふる食堂** at Kiyotsu Hyakkaten and the gorge-side **渓谷** — good stops that pair a meal with sightseeing. Down toward Ishiuchi there's a genuine spread: the homely **食事 いろり** (irori, the sunken hearth), **ウィンターハウス大丸**, **けんちゃん**, and the Italian-leaning **バレーナ**. Further along sit **石亭**, the noodle-and-set-meal **食堂 関山**, **桃花**, and **新潟食道** celebrating Niigata's own cooking. For quick provisioning there are convenience stores (two Seven-Elevens and a Lawson) and the **はりまや** grocery about four kilometres out, plus the sweet-tooth stops **石どら**, **BLUE SEAL** and **魚沼スイーツガーデン NATURA**. A small mountain, a surprisingly deep pantry.
### Getting there & around
This is Kandatsu's quiet superpower. **Echigo-Yuzawa** on the **Joetsu Shinkansen** puts you roughly 75–90 minutes from Tokyo, and a **free shuttle covers the last ~7 minutes** to the base. That's about as frictionless as Japanese ski access gets. **Ishiuchi station** (a local stop) sits about 3.7 km away if you're exploring the valley. With a station this close and shuttles laid on, you don't need a car — though one opens up the Ishiuchi lodges and the gorge more easily. Logistics are a strength here, plain and simple.
### Where to stay
The in-lodge option, with its 24-hour access and onsen, is the true ski-in, ski-out choice. For inn character, the valley toward Ishiuchi holds a whole constellation of family-run places: the minshuku **渓山荘**, **旅館 村山荘** and **清津館** near the gorge (around 2 km), and further out a cluster of lodges — **ノースポイントロッヂ**, **ブルージュ**, **前田屋旅館**, **ロッヂ マシュー**, **みせ旅館**, **ロッジ ホワイトスター**, **ロッヂ カナダ** and the onsen-inn **丸山温泉 古城館**. This is the kind of old lodge country where a host meets you at the door and your boots dry by the stove.
### Beyond the slopes
The standout nearby is the **Kiyotsu Gorge** (清津峡), under 2 km away — one of Japan's celebrated ravines, with its **渓谷トンネル** walking tunnel and a mirrored entrance installation (ペリスコープ) that has quietly become a place people travel for. Around it are small devotional sites: the 薬師堂, the 薬王尊, a memorial stone. There are campgrounds (清田山, 七ツ釜) for warmer-season returns and the 重地大池 nature park. And, as is increasingly common in snow country, the area even has **vacant houses for sale** (akiya) — for those who fall for the valley and start dreaming of staying.
### A suggested day
Ride the first shinkansen out, coffee in hand; the shuttle drops you at the lodge before the crowds thicken. Chase the steep blacks while the snow is fresh, then warm up with a bowl at **いろり**. Late afternoon, drift down to the **Kiyotsu Gorge tunnel** as the light goes blue. Back at the lodge, soak in the base-building onsen. Dinner among the Ishiuchi inns — then, because you can, a run or two under the night-ski floodlights before the last soak and bed.
### When to book
Kandatsu's snow runs deepest **January through March**. Do your planning in the **August–November** window: that's when to fix your Tokyo dates, reserve a valley inn (the family lodges are few and fill fast), and lock the easy shinkansen-plus-shuttle route while the good rooms remain.
*Scorecard note: this report reflects only what we could verify — no scores were supplied for Kandatsu, so we've let the facts speak. Logistics and onsen convenience are its clear strengths; terrain is small but genuinely steep; the "village" is really one warm, always-lit lodge.*
