## Ishiuchi Maruyama — 石打丸山スキー場
### Overview
There's a particular kind of ski resort that has quietly seen everything — the fashionable decades, the quiet ones — and simply kept its lights on for whoever comes up the hill. Ishiuchi Maruyama is one of those. It sits above the Echigo-Yuzawa snow country in Niigata, a large mountain of 23 runs and 22 kilometres of skiing, rising from a modest 260 m base to 920 m at the top. It is close enough to the shinkansen to be almost embarrassingly easy to reach, yet it keeps the worn-in, unhurried feel of a place that has been a ski village far longer than it has been a "destination". The 2020 Sunrise Express gondola gave it a modern spine; the long night-skiing sessions give it a soul that glows after dark. If you want deep Japanese snow without the airport-shuffle of the famous northern names, this is the honest answer.
### The skiing
Twenty-three runs and 660 metres of vertical make Ishiuchi Maruyama a genuinely large mountain by Honshu standards, and the layout rewards the curious. The new Sunrise Express gondola (2020) does the heavy lifting to the upper mountain, and from there the runs fan out long and forgiving — this is a place that flatters intermediates and gives beginners room to grow, while still offering enough length and pitch to keep a stronger skier honest for a few days. Two things make it distinctive. First, the lift-linking toward GALA and Yuzawa Kogen: on a good day you can ski across a much larger connected domain without ever returning to the car. Second, the night skiing — the long evening sessions are part of the identity here, floodlit runs and the peculiar hush of skiing under lights while snow drifts through the beams. Niigata snow country is reliably one of the snowiest inhabited places on earth; the powder is heavier and more frequent than the marketing-famous resorts, and it falls with a consistency that makes even a mid-week visit worth the ticket. At ¥5,500 a day, it is also honestly priced.
### Village & charm
The base at Ishiuchi is not a manicured resort plaza — it's a real snow-country village, the kind that has grown up around the lifts over generations. That is precisely the charm. Come down at dusk, when the night-skiing lights click on and the little lodges and *ryokan* along the hill start showing warm windows, and you feel the thing we quietly measure everything against: the lit doorway, boots steaming by the stove, an older host who has done this a thousand winters and still means it. The base has a mountain restaurant right at the lifts and a small scatter of eateries within walking distance; it isn't a nightlife town, and it doesn't pretend to be. What it offers instead is atmosphere — snow piled to the eaves, quiet lanes, and the sense of having found a working village rather than a stage set.
### Onsen
The village has its own hot spring: **Ishiuchi Onsen** (石打温泉), about 1.2 km from the slopes, an unpretentious local bath at the base — exactly the sort of place to soak tired legs among people who live here. Within a short drive the choices widen generously. **舞子温泉** at the neighbouring Maiko resort is barely a kilometre away; **石打ユングパルナス** (about 3 km) is a larger bathing complex; and out toward Yuzawa you'll find **SPAガーラの湯**, **コマクサの湯**, **江神温泉共同浴場** and the **岩原のんのんの湯**, plus a public foot-bath at 湯沢中央公園. For a resort this size, the density of hot water within five kilometres is a real luxury — you could bathe somewhere different most nights of a week's trip.
### Food & drink
Eating here is unpretentious snow-country fare, close to the hill. Right at the base sit **Back Country Maiko** and the **マウンテンレストラン** mountain restaurant, with **Café at the top ITADAKI** and the **スカイドームレストラン** up on the mountain for a mid-run stop. A short way down toward the village the local spirit shows: **おにぎり工房 いしうち**, an unfussy rice-ball shop, and the **食堂 関山** diner are the kind of places that feed skiers honestly. Further out — still within five km — you reach soba at **そば処 富永**, farm-to-table at **Farm Front** and **IRORIカフェ 鈴木農場**, and Japanese sets at **和食レストラン ゆた**. For sweets, **魚沼 スイーツガーデン NATURA** is worth the detour, and there are convenience stores (Seven-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) and a couple of small groceries for provisioning. This is Niigata rice country — the plainest bowl of rice here is a quiet event.
### Getting there & around
This is the resort's trump card. The **Joetsu Shinkansen** runs to **Echigo-Yuzawa**, and a shuttle covers the ~15 minutes to Ishiuchi. Local **JR Joetsu Line** trains stop at Ishiuchi station (about 2.9 km from the slopes). Extraordinarily, **GALA Yuzawa** — which has its own shinkansen station — is only about 4 km away and lift-linked, so you can effectively arrive by bullet train and ski. Add the Shiozawa-Ishiuchi service area on the expressway and this is one of the most logistically painless big mountains in Japan. Its logistics score is deservedly high; you can leave Tokyo late morning and be skiing under lights that evening.
### Where to stay
The lodging here is the good kind of old-fashioned — small *ryokan* and family lodges rather than glassy hotels. Notably, **丸山温泉 古城館** (about 2.9 km) pairs lodging with its own hot spring. Toward Yuzawa there are grander old inns like **雪国の宿 高半** and **御湯宿 中屋**. Book the small lodges for the dusk-window feeling; book the onsen inns for a soak-and-sleep trip.
### Beyond the slopes
The nearby peak of **飯士山** watches over the valley. In the surrounding area, quiet local culture rewards a wander: the **今泉博物館** in Minami-Uonuma, the **Suwa shrine** and its old gate toward Yuzawa, the **雪国館** history-and-folklore museum, and the touching marker for the **birthplace of Yuzawa skiing** (湯沢スキー発祥の地). The **道の駅 南魚沼** roadside station is a good rainy-day stop for local produce. And, as is increasingly true across snow country, the area even has vacant houses (*akiya*) quietly for sale — for those who dream of keeping their own lit window on the hill.
### A suggested day
Take a mid-morning shinkansen, drop bags at a village lodge, and ride the Sunrise Express to warm up on the long upper runs. Lunch light at ITADAKI with a view. Ski the afternoon toward the GALA-linked terrain, then come back for the thing you really came for: night skiing, floodlit and hushed, snow in the beams. Off the hill by eight, soak at Ishiuchi Onsen, then a bowl of something hot and a bottle of Niigata rice wine — and the walk back past warm windows in the falling snow.
### When to book
Snow country's best window is **January to March**, with the deepest, most reliable powder in the heart of that stretch. Plan and book in the **August–November** window, before Japan's winter demand tightens — earlier if you want the small village lodges, which fill by word of mouth long before the first flakes.
*A note on our data: many base-area points come through as unnamed on the map, so this report leans on what we can name honestly. As much as we know, the shape of the place is clear — a big, snowy, easy-to-reach mountain with an old village heart.*
