Happo-One (Hakuba)

### Overview Some mountains ask you to earn them, and Happo-One is one of those. This is the great serious face of the Hakuba Valley — the hill that hosted the 1998 Olympic downhill, with a vertical drop of over a thousand metres from a 1,831 m top to a 760 m base, and long fall-line runs that pull the good skiers back season after season. It is Large in the ways that matter: not sprawling with gentle acreage, but tall, steep and honest. As the anchor of the ten-resort Hakuba Valley pass, it sits at the heart of a whole valley of snow, with a base village that has grown into one of Japan's most cosmopolitan mountain towns while keeping, in its quiet corners, that older Nagano warmth. Come for the terrain; stay for the dusk walk back to a lit window and a bath. ### The skiing Thirteen runs across roughly 30 km don't tell the story here — the numbers are modest because the character isn't about count, it's about pitch and length. The upper faces are steep, exposed and genuinely challenging; the fall-line runs are long enough to burn your legs honestly. This is a mountain that rewards strong intermediates and above, and it can humble a beginner who wanders too high. Powder reliability in the Hakuba Valley is dependably good, though Happo's east-facing aspect and altitude mean conditions vary more with weather than some of its neighbours — on a cold restocking day it is superb, and the sheer vertical means you can chase the best snow up and down the mountain. Who it suits: confident skiers who want a big-mountain feeling, groups mixing ability across the valley pass, and anyone who wants to ski a real Olympic pedigree. ### Village & charm The base at Happo (Nakiyama) is busy and functional — lift stations, ticket windows, ski shops thick on the ground (Central Snowsports, Rhythm Japan, the venerable Ski Pro Shop 500 Miles, mont-bell nearby). But walk fifteen minutes and the village opens into something softer: pensions with steep snow-heavy roofs, an information centre, the small Shinmei Suwa shrine tucked among the lanes, and the Olympic torch cauldron and medal monuments quietly marking 1998. The dusk-lodge feeling lives in the residential streets between the lifts and the onsen — narrow roads, snow banked high, warm windows, and the smell of dinner. It's an international place now, and honestly the busier for it, so secrecy is not Happo's virtue; but the charm is real if you seek the older corners rather than the main strip. ### Onsen This is a genuine strength. Happo sits atop a highly alkaline hot spring, and the village bath **Happo no Yu (八方の湯)**, just 0.8 km from the slopes, is the easy after-ski ritual — silky, alkaline water a short walk from the lifts. A little further, **Mimizuku no Yu (みみずくの湯)** at 1.2 km offers a rotenburo with views out across the valley, best in the blue light of late afternoon. And for the ones who like their bathing rustic, **Obinata no Yu (おびなたの湯)** at 2.4 km sits out toward Sarukura — an outdoor bath with a wilder feel. Beyond these the valley has still more (Kurashita no Yu, Kitaone no Yu, a foot bath in the village), so an onsen day here is easily done. ### Food & drink Happo eats well, and internationally. Within a short walk you'll find coffee done properly (Satoru Coffee, Sounds Like Cafe, Roots Cafe), casual global comfort (Duke's Bacon, TakoTaco, Uncle Steven's), Spanish small plates at Tomatito, and the honest Japanese end of things at places like Maeda and Usakichi near the lifts. There's a real cluster around the 1 km mark — The Alpine Grill, Bear's Café, Penguin Cafe, Fireside Lounge — that gives you an après scene without leaving the neighbourhood. For self-catering there are two lovely bakeries (パンとお菓子の工房 あーる, and koubo-nikki), a good butcher (大黒屋精肉店), full supermarkets (Aeon, A-Coop, Delicia) and the usual convenience stores. You will not go hungry, and you can eat differently every night. ### Getting there & around Logistics are straightforward by Japanese-alps standards. Take the shinkansen to Nagano, then it's roughly an hour by express bus into Hakuba. The nearest rail is **Hakuba station** on the local JR Oito Line (about 2.5 km from the slopes), and the **Happo Bus Terminal** (1 km) is the hub for moving around the valley — essential, because the ten-resort pass only sings if you use the shuttle network. Once here, most of the village is walkable, and buses knit the valley together. ### Where to stay Lodging is abundant and varied — over a hundred options within a few kilometres. Close to the lifts you'll find pensions and small hotels with soul: Brocken Hütte and Shiroma-kane Ryokan (0.6–0.7 km), The Happo and Kokoro Hotel Hakuba, the character-filled Oak Forest, Moment Chalet, Apricot Pension, Snowdrift Lodge, and older Japanese inns like Ōshita Ryokan. There's a full spread from backpacker beds (Mt Hakuba Backpackers) to chalets (Chalet Strickland, Wadano). For the dusk-lodge feeling, favour the smaller pensions up toward Wadano over the big central hotels. ### Beyond the slopes The 1998 legacy is everywhere — the ski jump stadium (0.3 km), the torch cauldron and medal monuments. There's an old story in the land too: the **Salt Road (Chikuni Kaidō)** once ran through here, with its trail markers still about, and small shrines (Shinmei Suwa, Hirakawa) dot the village. Higher up, the Happo-ike area and the mountain hut Happo-ike Sansō (3.3 km) mark the summer alpine gateway. Neighbouring Iwatake (2.7 km) offers a gentler day. And, quietly, the area even has vacant houses for sale — the akiya that tempt those who fall for a place and start to imagine staying. ### A suggested day Coffee and a warm pastry from あーる, then first lifts to chase the long upper fall-lines while the light is flat and the snow untouched. Lunch high on the mountain, a few more laps, then down as the valley goes gold. Peel off boots, walk to **Happo no Yu** for the alkaline soak, wander home through the snowy lanes past lit windows. Dinner — Spanish plates at Tomatito, or something simple and Japanese near the lifts — and a last drink by a fire. ### When to book Plan in the August–November window for January–March snow. January and February are the reliable heart of the season; March brings longer light and softer afternoons. Because Happo is popular and international, the good pensions and chalets go early — lock lodging by autumn and let the bath and the mountain take care of the rest.
