The deep write-up

## Hakuba 47
There's a particular kind of skier who gravitates to Hakuba 47 — the one who wants their turns to matter, who watches the way snow settles on a north-facing slope and knows it will still be soft come afternoon. This is a compact, purposeful mountain: eight runs, fifteen kilometres, a vertical drop of some 846 metres from a base at 830m up to 1,676m. It is also, quietly, one of the great connectors of the Hakuba Valley — lift-linked to neighbouring Goryu, so a single day's skiing feels far larger than the numbers suggest. What Hakuba 47 does best it does very well indeed: it holds its snow, and it builds the finest terrain park in the valley. ### The skiing The mountain's defining feature is its aspect. Facing north, it retains snow that other slopes lose to the sun, which means the powder here stays honest for longer — the kind of consistency that rewards a lazy start and a mid-morning arrival. The terrain itself is a study in contrast: on one side, immaculately shaped park features that draw freestyle riders from across the region; on the other, tree-lined pistes that fall away toward the base with a pleasing rhythm. With only eight marked runs, this is not a mountain you come to for endless variety within its own boundaries — but the Goryu link changes that entirely, opening up a broad shared domain that suits intermediates, park rats, and anyone happy to link two mountains into one long day. Beginners will find gentler ground over at Goryu's base; committed powder hunters will love how long the good snow lingers in the trees. ### Village & charm There is no grand village at the foot of Hakuba 47 in the way of some larger resorts — the base is functional, framed by lifts (いいもり第1高速ペア and the rest) and the workmanlike infrastructure of a mountain that takes its skiing seriously. But scatter outward a kilometre or two and the valley reveals its character: a dense weave of pensions and small lodges with names like Meteor Garden, Seventh Heaven and Powder Temple, boots drying, windows lit against the dusk. This is the Hakuba Valley's genuine charm — not a stage-set village but a lived-in snow country of family-run guesthouses, a convenience store's glow at the roadside, and the sense that somewhere nearby a stove is warm and someone is expecting you. It scores modestly on pure village soul, but high on that quieter, dusk-lodge feeling. ### Onsen The bathing here is a real pleasure, and closer than you'd expect. Just 400m from the base sits 白馬かたくり温泉・十郎の湯 — the nearest soak, and an easy end to a ski day. The resort's own listed bath, 竜神の湯 at Escal Plaza, is shared with the Goryu base around 1.5km off, convenient if you've skied the linked terrain. Push a little further and the valley's onsen open up generously: みみずくの湯 at 2.8km, the celebrated 白馬八方温泉 八方の湯 at 3.2km (with a public foot bath, 足湯, nearby if you only want to warm your toes), and 倉下の湯 and 北尾根の湯 further out. For a medium-sized resort, this is a rich onsen hand — few places let you be soaking within five minutes of the last lift. ### Food & drink The eating scene skews casual and international, in the way of the modern Hakuba Valley. Close to base you'll find 虹屋 丼丸 (rice bowls, 0.5km) and a clutch of guesthouse-cafés — HEYZA, Coccola J, ガーリック. A short way on, the choices broaden into something genuinely fun: 大黒食堂 for honest Japanese fare, Pizzakaya Izakaya and Cherry pub for a beer-and-plates evening, and a cluster around the 2km mark — Penguin Cafe, The Alpine Grill, Tomatito, Sounds Like Cafe, SARUGAKU, TakoTaco, Bear's Café, Molica — that shows just how cosmopolitan this valley has become. For self-caterers, there's an イオン supermarket at 1.7km, local bakeries (酵母パン koubo-nikki, パンとお菓子の工房 あーる) and 大黒屋精肉店 for good meat. Convenience stores (ローソン, セブン-イレブン) sit within walking distance of the base. ### Getting there & around The nearest station is Kamishiro (神城) on the JR Ōito Line, a local line rather than the shinkansen — so the classic approach is by train to Hakuba or Kamishiro and then the resort shuttle. Hakuba station itself is 2.9km from the mountain, and the 白馬八方バスターミナル (3.2km) is the valley's main bus hub, with the Hakuba Information Center offering tickets and luggage storage. There are petrol stations (ENEOS, 出光) and the 道の駅白馬 roadside stop for drivers. Logistics are straightforward but not effortless — this is a valley that rewards a little planning, or a car. ### Where to stay Lodging is abundant and characterful within a kilometre or two: ホテル丸大 sits closest at 0.3km, with a wealth of pensions and chalets a short way off — Time Harbor Hakuba, Inaka Hakuba, Japandi Chalet, Hotel Cultured, the evocatively named Powder Temple and Powder Peak, plus classic Japanese-style pensions like 北原館 and 悠々舎. For the dusk-lodge feeling — a small place, a host, boots by the door — the pension cluster around 1.2–1.4km is where to look. ### Beyond the slopes Hakuba is Olympic country, and the traces are everywhere: the ski jump stadium (白馬ジャンプ競技場, 2.8km), the 聖火台 flame monument and the "100 GOLD MEDALS" markers commemorating the 1998 Winter Games. There's quieter history too — the old salt road (塩の道千國街道), temples and shrines (貞麟寺, 平川神社, 蕶麟寺), the 飯田十三仏堂, and a botanical garden (白馬山麓植物園) at 0.9km. Gallery Kirria Japonica offers a cultural pause. And for those who fall properly in love with the valley: the area even has vacant houses — akiya — for sale, a doorway to something more permanent. ### A suggested day Rise late and let the north-facing snow do its work. First lifts up 47's park side, then link across to Goryu for a long, wandering morning over two mountains. Lunch somewhere unhurried — a rice bowl at base, or push out to Penguin Cafe. An afternoon in the trees while the light softens. Then the short walk to 十郎の湯 to soak the day out of your legs, before a beer and plates at Cherry pub or an evening at your pension, boots steaming by the stove. ### When to book For the deep, reliable January–March snow this mountain is built to hold, plan in the August–November window. That's when the good pensions and chalets fill, when shuttle and lodging logistics settle, and when the quiet pleasure of a north-facing valley is still yours to claim.
