Why is Japan's snow so good?
Japan's snow is so good because bitterly cold, dry air from Siberia sweeps across the relatively warm Sea of Japan, picking up moisture, then dumps it as frequent, light, low-density powder when it hits Japan's mountains. This 'sea-effect' snow falls again and again through mid-winter — so runs refill fast, and the snow stays dry and deep. Hokkaido and the Sea-of-Japan side of Honshu (Niigata, Nagano) get the most.
Sea-effect snow, at ocean scale
The winter monsoon drives frigid air off the Asian continent. Crossing the comparatively warm Sea of Japan, that air soaks up heat and moisture; forced up over Japan's spine of mountains it cools and unloads — as snow, constantly. It's the same physics as North American lake-effect snow, but the "lake" is a sea, so it runs for months.
Why it's light and dry
The air is very cold and the storms frequent, so the snow falls at low density — the bottomless, feather-light powder Japan is known for — and refills tracked-out runs overnight rather than over a week.
